Manohar Parrikar
Manohar Parrikar (13 December 1955 – 17 March 2019) was an Indian politician and leader of Bharatiya Janata Party who was the Chief Minister of Goa from 14 March 2017 till his death.[3][4] Previously he was Chief Minister of Goa from 2000 to 2005 and from 2012 to 2014.
Parrikar proposed the name of Narendra Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate before the 2013 BJP parliamentary elections convention in Goa, later he served in the BJP government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Defence Minister of India from 2014 to 2017. He was a former member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.
He died from pancreatic cancer on 17 March 2019.
Early life and education
Manohar Parrikar was born in Mapusa, Goa. He studied at Loyola High School, Margao. He completed his secondary education in Marathi and went on to graduate in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) in 1978. He was the first IIT alumnus to serve as MLA of an Indian state. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 2001.
Political career
Parrikar joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a young age and became a mukhya shikshak (chief instructor) in the final years of his schooling. After graduating from IIT, he resumed RSS work in Mapusa while maintaining a private business, and became a sanghchalak (local director) at the age of 26. He was active in the RSS's North Goa unit, becoming a key organiser of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. He was seconded by RSS to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with the objective of fighting the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.[12] Parrikar has often expressed considerable pride in his RSS background, saying that he learnt "discipline, progressiveness,nationalism and social responsibility from the RSS". He is sometimes described as having been a pracharak of the RSS.[14] Often regarded as the CM of commons.
As a member of the BJP, Parrikar was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Goa in 1994. He was leader of the opposition from June to November 1999. He successfully contested the election to become Chief Minister of Goa for the first time on 24 October 2000, but his tenure lasted only until 27 February 2002. On 5 June 2002, he was re-elected and served another term as Chief Minister.
On 29 January 2005, his government was reduced to a minority in the Assembly after four BJP MLAs resigned from the House. Pratapsing Rane of the Indian National Congress would subsequently replace Parrikar as Chief Minister. In 2007, the Parrikar led BJP was defeated in the Goa state elections by the Indian National Congress led by Digambar Kamat. His party became victorious once again after the BJP and their party-allies won twenty-four seats against the Indian National Congress' nine in the Goa Assembly Elections held in March 2012. In the 2014 General Elections, BJP won both the Lok Sabha seats in Goa.[16] Parrikar was reluctant to leave Goa and move to Delhi in November 2014, by his own admission but was persuaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the central government. He was succeeded by Laxmikant Parsekar as Goa's CM. Parrikar had represented the Panaji constituency in the Goa Legislative Assembly when he was a player in the state politics.[17]
In November 2014, Parrikar was chosen as the Minister of Defence replacing Arun Jaitley, who, till then, held the additional charge of the Ministry. His entry into the parliament was facilitated by choosing him as the party's candidate for the elected Rajya Sabhaseat from Uttar Pradesh. He has since been credited with transparent, efficient and fast decision making in what was till then thought of as a sluggish ministry. He has also opened up several investigations into alleged scams like Augusta Westland Chopper scam.
On March 14, 2017, Parrikar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Goa. Goa Forward Party led by Vijai Sardesai, one of the parties who allied with BJP in Goa after election results were announced, had said that it would extend support to the BJP only if Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was brought back to the state as Chief Minister.

Mr Saini, who had floated his own political outfit four months ago, hit out at the BJP saying it had allegedly betrayed the people who had voted for the party.
"I have had nothing to do with the party for the past three years," Mr Saini told reporters.
"A few months after I entered the Lok Sabha after defeating the then sitting MP Naveen Jindal (from Kurukshetra), I had informed the BJP that I was no longer its member as the party had betrayed the interests of the people, who had reposed faith in me," he said.
Mr Saini said that now it is for the BJP to take a call on his membership.
Mr Saini hit out at mainstream political parties, accusing them of using backward classes, the poor and the farmers as "vote banks", but "dumping" them after coming to power.
He said backward classes had voted for the BJP in the Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, but the party had failed to address their grievances.
The lawmaker, who in September had floated the Loktantra Suraksha Party, reiterated that there was no improvement in the condition of the backward classes, the poor and the farmers in the country despite different parties promising to work for their welfare.
He alleged that the sole aim of these parties was to grab power.
"The (big) parties resort to unethical alliances to grab power, however our party will work for systematic changes to improve the conditions of all sections of society," said Mr Saini, whose party is going to contest next year's parliamentary and state assembly polls.

BJP dividing people on religion and caste, says Kejriwal at Haryana rally
Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday accused Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar of dividing people on basis of religion and caste and seeking votes on casteist lines in recently concluded mayoral elections in the state.
“Earlier they had divided Jats and non-Jats during the Jat agitatation in 2016 and now they were trying to divide Punjabis and non-Punjabis as the BJP’s mayoral candidate in Karnal had issued advertisements in newspaper appealing the people of Punjabi community to vote for BJP, which has given a Punjabi CM”, Kejriwal said addressing AAP’s hospital and school rally here.
He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party, by dividing people on basis of religion and caste, was helping Pakistan, which was trying to divide India since 1947.
Claiming that the people of other communities and castes were feeling cheated after this advertisement, Kejriwal appealed to people of Haryana not to get mislead by the BJP.
“We don’t have any objections if Khattar saab works only for Punjabis, but what was the fault of others who had voted for him”, he asked. Kejriwal, however, did not mention the arrest of party workers by the state police for allegedly circulating fake news about chief minister Khattar on social media but AAP state in charge Gopal Rai and Haryana unit president Naveen Jaihind slammed the state government on the issue.
Kejriwal also slammed the successive governments and political parties for failure to provide better education and medical facilities to the people after 70 years of Independence.
“We have made all schools and hospitals of Delhi better in only three years rule, but the question is that why all these parties and previous governments failed to do so in past 70 years”, he asked.
Kejriwal said that AAP government in Delhi has done a lot for the people of Delhi and now he also wants to work for the people of Haryana, which is his motherland.
“I appeal the youths of Haryana to support the AAP in coming elections and would provide you jobs, better education and medical facilities to your children and family members”, he said.
AAP MP Bhagwant Mann entertained the gathering with his jokes and satirical attacks on the leaders of opposition parties.
In his speech in Hindi, Mann targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and former Haryana chief minister OP Chautala.
“Har Har Modi slogan of the last election has now become Haar Haar Modi”, Mann said alleging that Modi’s Make In India programme had fallen flat.
“Modi should now listen ‘mann ki baat’ of people of country, instead of telling his ‘mann ki baat’ to people”, he said, referring to the prime minister’s monthly radio show.
